The macho man of Spanish painting was obsessed with bulls. For him they were symbols of mythic power, but also impotence and mortality

Superwoman: ‘Work, Build and Don’t Whine'

18 June — 17 September 2016

GRAD, in collaboration with Thea Films, is delighted to present Superwoman: 'Work, Build and Don’t Whine'.

Curated by Dr Natalia Murray and actor and award winning filmmaker Dolya Gavanski, the exhibition presents a fascinating exploration of the iconography of the Soviet woman in propaganda from the October Revolution of 1917 to the fall of the Soviet Union and the arrival of Perestroika in 1991. This exhibition, the 10th in GRAD’s Academy programme, charts the development of the Soviet woman and assesses what her legacy is today

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:
Good exhibition space in central London for Russian art. Well curated exhibitions. Thought-provoking and insightful look back at Russia's past. reviewed here:

LL Archive 2016 Face - Exhibition @Gallery Different | London Life Archive | Scoop.it

Face

In a world increasingly dominated by media imagery, the rendering of portraiture has and is continuing to change. It is no longer a statement about the portrait subject immortalising their perceived place in the world. It is much more a statement by the artist both on the art of portraiture itself, and on concepts of beauty, identity, social acceptance, self image, social and political inequality and the role of celebrity. The artists in this exhibition explore these themes and more in a range of media and genres demonstrating our continuing obsession with the ‘Face’.

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:

Camden Arts Centre is close to LLHQ and we always enjoy our visits there. There's a nice cafe with peaceful outside space , surprising given its location slap bang beside the busy -busy  Finchley Road. Free wifi too and good coffee. So once the work is done , the emails checked and the coffee drunk,  you can head upstairs to see  free exhibitions that will most likely challenge you, perhaps refresh you and often stimulate you more than the coffee!

It's a friendly place, the staff are always welcoming and sometimes it's great to chat to someone there about a particular exhibition. I suspect some of the  room  supervisors are artists themselves or art students,  They certainly add valuable insights, when asked about an exhibition.

The  building is light & airy and  the garden is green and offers hands on projects for community participation.

Big thumbs up from us.

13 - 22/02/2013 @ Romanian Cultural Institute

"Precise and refined. Resplendent. Decadent. Subtle and minimalist or eccentric and cutting-edge… Just a few ways of describing Romanian fashion in 2013. Nevertheless, the designers brought together in the exhibition "The Rest Is Tomorrow" prove it is easier to say what it is not than to describe what it is. They belong to different generations and have different aesthetic agendas and concerns, but are united in reviving and reimagining the creative potential of Romanian design, textiles and decorative arts. Their six brands have established individual identities, yet together, they open the way to a new philosophy, a neo-traditional outlook."

LL archive Alex Katz: Quick Light, exhibition review: Seduced by surface beauty | London Life Archive | Scoop.it
I always feel I should love Alex Katz’s paintings. I admire that in Fifties New York he wanted to create a new kind of figurative painting in response to Abstract Expressionism. I share his adoration of Matisse, an artist whose legacy he’s often credited with reinforcing. Painters I like see Katz as a god.

"Umi Kumano creates his works by pairing seemingly unrelated scenes and motifs as if they were part of a single event in one world. Although these elements may share no meaningful connection, the imagination of the viewers spins them into ‘Unexpected Stories’.

Through their unconventional juxtaposition, mundane and commonplace scenes from the everyday world morph from reality to surreality...."
