Perspective | Melinda Gates: I spent my career in technology. I wasn’t prepared for its effect on my kids. | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"The pace of change is what amazes me the most. The challenges my younger daughter will be facing when she starts high school in the fall are light-years away from what my elder daughter, who’s now in college, experienced in 2010. My younger daughter’s friends live a lot of their lives through filters on Instagram and Snapchat, two apps that didn’t even exist when my elder daughter was dipping a toe in social media.

But I am optimistic about what smartphones and social media can do for people. I am thrilled to see kids learning on smartphones, doctors using apps to diagnose diseases and marginalized groups such as gay and lesbian students finding support they never had before through social networks."

10 Practical Strategies to Integrate Technology in Your Classroom

10 Practical Strategies to Integrate Technology in Your Classroom | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
"Using technology in class should always be motivated by a real need to optimize students' learning and to enhance your teaching. Every time you want to digitize a teaching task ask yourself the following questions: what are the added advantages of integrating technology in this task? And what are the alternative plans if things did not go as planned? The purpose is to make sure your use of technology is pedagogically sound and that it aligns with your own teaching goals. There are actually several ways to integrate technology in your classroom from collecting students feedback to grading paperlessly. In today's post, we are sharing with you this handy visual that features10 good examples of how you can put technology to serve your teaching. This visual is based on Marcus Guido's blog post "25 Easy Ways to Use Technology in the Classroom". We have done little bit of tweaking (with permission) on Marcus original list and ended up with the list below."

So what next? Well, the chances are that at least part of the answer could be sitting right by you. They’re called ‘women’. You may have heard of them. And it’s time they were a much bigger part of the UK’s tech sector.

Getting teachers on board the iPad Express

Getting teachers on board the iPad Express | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"The challenge then with the iPad is like anything else computer related. Can we get the teachers on board? Regardless of Apple’s PR machine telling us how magical and simple it is, despite the fact a toddler can pick one up and play games without batting their cute little eyelids, the fact remains there are still many teachers who haven’t embraced laptops after 15 years of exposure let alone a completely different system present in the iPad."

4 Skills Tech Industry Employees Say Today’s Students Need to Succeed

4 Skills Tech Industry Employees Say Today’s Students Need to Succeed | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
When preparing students to be ready for the future, the focus often is on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. But, in a podcast with employees from Google, Pinterest and Twitter, EdSurge found that those in the tech industry believe students need skills beyond just technical expertise.

“I think the one thing to keep in mind is that it’s impossible to say what technical skills people are going to need in 10 or 20 years,” says Ryan Greenberg, a software engineer at Twitter. “I think that necessary job skills actually have to be a little bit higher level than specific technology.”

We gathered four key takeaways from what Greenberg, Google for Education program manager Drea Alphonso and Pinterest software engineer Trisha Quan say are the best skills future-ready students can have.

Part One: Going Beyond SAMR… 5 Ideas

Part One: Going Beyond SAMR… 5 Ideas | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
t is wonderful to see that SAMR is a great place to start. It provides the teacher with some definitions and an understanding of how technology can both facilitate learning while also expanding it. In fact, teaching teachers about the line in between SA and MR allows teachers to see if they are on the road to transformation. This is often referred to as teaching above… or below… the line.

I am certain you are waiting for that “however”… so here it comes. SAMR is one model, and perhaps a first step, in helping teachers understand technology integration and transformational learning. Do not stop with SAMR! Try to understand that a lesson at the top of SAMR may not be the ultimate learning opportunity in technology integration. As you facilitate teachers on a best practices journey it will be important to look at lessons with some other filters, SAMR, after all, is only one. Let’s take a look at some other concepts we must keep in mind as we help educators understand SAMR. Please enjoy the ideas below, and by now you must know that in future posts I will be building upon these important ideas.

For $499, a Drone for Beginners: DJI’s Spark - NYTimes

For $499, a Drone for Beginners: DJI’s Spark - NYTimes | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
If you thought those drones buzzing around on the beach were annoying, just wait and see what happens when they become cheaper than iPhones.

Whether you like it or not, drones — miniature remotely controlled aircraft — may be on the cusp of going mainstream as they plummet in price. DJI, the world’s largest consumer drone maker, which is based in Shenzhen, China, will soon release Spark, its first $499 drone. That’s roughly half the price of the most popular drones on the market, or three-quarters the cost of an iPhone, which starts at about $650.

I tested Spark over several days this week and found it surprisingly capable for a low-cost drone. Unlike most expensive drones, which operate with a physical remote control, this machine was designed to work primarily with a smartphone app; you can also make hand gestures to move Spark or make it take your selfie. It shoots superb high-definition video, weighs about a quarter of a pound and is so compact you could stuff it in a tote bag.

I was able to confidently fly Spark, the first drone I have ever used, after several sessions, a testament to its overall ease of use.
